Qualitative package design research reveals key consumer insights
Packaging Digest
Package design research is much more important now than it was 30 years ago, since the great majority of brands now receive relatively little media advertising support. In many instances, the retail package is the advertising campaign. In a few seconds — at the point of purchase — the retail package must attract attention, tell the brand’s story and evoke positive purchase interest.

Protecting your packaging
Packaging Europe
It makes sound business sense to protect the brand, and its underlying intellectual property, especially as over 80 percent of most companies' value now stems directly from intangible assets. Design, branding and trade dress (characteristics of the visual appearance of a product or its packaging that denote the source of the product to consumers) potentially contribute greatly to increasing the value of an organization's intangible assets and its intellectual property.

Some studies have suggested possible links to everything from cancer to heart disease to infertility to kidney and liver problems, prompting European Food Safety Authority to re-evaluate the potential risks of BPA.

Berry's rebranded Blue Clover expands packaging design reach
Plastics News
What's in a name? Everything, as far as Scott Fisher is concerned. As design director of Berry Plastics Corp.'s rebranded packaging design studio, Fisher believes the new name of Blue Clover Studios cuts the heart of the studio’s mission of being different. "Blue ties us into Berry Plastics because of the blue palette they’ve always used. Clover, we felt, was very unique, especially when it comes to a four-leaf clover. It's not something you run across every day," he said.

The packaging bump that could cut a 4 million ton mountain of UK food waste
The Guardian
Britons throw away more than 4 million tons of consumable food and drink from their homes ever year and a revamp of the sell-by-date label could save perfectly edible food from the bin bag. It was while researching how blind people utilize public transport that an industrial designer came across an innovation to keep our fridges stocked a little bit longer. Solveiga Pakstaite, says the study led to her question how blind people can check sell-by dates. The result of her curiosity is a work in progress called the Bump Mark; a label which is attached to food packaging and changes shape when the produce deteriorates.

To exempt or not to exempt: should the UK 5p charge apply to biodegradable bags?
Plastics Today
When the 5p charge on single-use plastic carrier bags takes effect in England in October 2015, the country will have finally caught up with the rest of the U.K., in which a similar charge has already been introduced. That much is clear. What is not yet at all clear is whether or not single-use carrier bags made of biodegradable plastic will be exempt from the charge or not. And even more to the point, what kind of biodegradable plastic should be exempt, if there is to be an exemption?
