Qualitative package design research reveals key consumer insights
Package design research is much more important now than it was 30 years
ago, since the great majority of brands now receive relatively little
media advertising support. In many instances, the retail package is the
advertising campaign. In a few seconds — at the point of purchase — the
retail package must attract attention, tell the brand’s story and evoke
positive purchase interest.
Glad Wrap frantically reworking new cutter design after public outrage and threats to boycott the product
The Daily Mail
Popular cling film brand Glad Wrap have been forced to rework their new
packaging design after a furore of public backlash from disgruntled
customers. The company's controversial decision to relocate the metal
cutter from the base of the box to inside the lid has caused outrage
amongst consumers, with many taking to social media to declare a boycott
of the product.
Protecting your packaging
It makes sound business sense to protect the brand, and its underlying
intellectual property, especially as over 80 percent of most companies'
value now stems directly from intangible assets. Design, branding and
trade dress (characteristics of the visual appearance of a product or
its packaging that denote the source of the product to consumers)
potentially contribute greatly to increasing the value of an
organization's intangible assets and its intellectual property.
MOCON has virtually reinvented permeation testing with its fully automated oxygen and water vapor permeation systems. Faster testing, easier to use, increased accuracy, lower cost.
BPA plastics chemical poses no health risk, says European watchdog
The chemical bisphenol A, used to stiffen some plastic food containers,
poses no health risk to consumers of any age, including unborn children,
at current levels of exposure, Europe's food safety watchdog recently
said. Some studies have suggested possible links to everything from
cancer to heart disease to infertility to kidney and liver problems,
prompting European Food Safety Authority to re-evaluate the potential
risks of BPA.
Die-fold packages were avoided in certain markets because it was difficult to achieve airtight sealing
Food Processing & Packaging
Manufacturers who previously relied on sealed aluminum foil or flow pack
for chocolate bars can now use OPP hermetically folded and sealed

Berry's rebranded Blue Clover expands packaging design reach
What's in a name? Everything, as far as Scott Fisher is concerned. As
design director of Berry Plastics Corp.'s rebranded packaging design
studio, Fisher believes the new name of Blue Clover Studios cuts the
heart of the studio’s mission of being different. "Blue ties us into
Berry Plastics because of the blue palette they’ve always used. Clover,
we felt, was very unique, especially when it comes to a four-leaf
clover. It's not something you run across every day," he said.
'Empty' box design delivers brand message
A clever illusion for 3M's Scotch Magic Tape packaging in Germany drove home the "invisible" nature of the product by presenting consumers with a seemingly empty box holding five rolls of replacement tape. The limited-edition promotional package, launched in summer 2014, was the invention of Hamburg-based creative agency Kolle Rebbe.
In addition to being a manufacturer of quality metal, composite, and plastic doctor blades, Allison Systems now offers OEM and custom design chamber end seals. MORE
England to introduce plain cigarette packaging before next election
The government is to press ahead with legislation on plain packaging for
cigarettes before the general election after years of delay and
conflicting claims about the success of an Australian scheme. Ministers
have consulted on the measure for more than two years and were minded to
press ahead with legislation, but the proposal was dropped from the
last Queens Speech in 2013 on the insistence of David Cameron.
3-D package design elevates liquor's tactile lure
The 1.75-liter polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottle concept for the
Hard to Port brand jumps out of a sea of liquor bottles with a sculpted
octopus draped over the shoulder and side of the bottle. In addition to
being raised above the surface of the bottle, the octopus is rendered
with engraved and etched details.

The packaging bump that could cut a 4 million ton mountain of UK food waste
Britons throw away more than 4 million tons of consumable food and drink
from their homes ever year and a revamp of the sell-by-date label could
save perfectly edible food from the bin bag. It was while researching
how blind people utilize public transport that an industrial designer
came across an innovation to keep our fridges stocked a little bit
longer. Solveiga Pakstaite, says the study led to her question how blind
people can check sell-by dates. The result of her curiosity is a work
in progress called the Bump Mark; a label which is attached to food
packaging and changes shape when the produce deteriorates.
Fi-Cell PET bottle technology is coming to Europe
Plastic Technologies Inc., has been named the exclusive agent in Europe
for the sales and licensing for Toyo Seikan's Fi-Cell foamed PET bottle
processing technology for packaging applications. In 2014, the company
announced its exclusive representation of Fi-Cell technology in the
United States. The technology has already been commercialized by Toyo
Seikan in Japan for a line of coffee drinks.
Oversized canister expresses strength of new Brawny wet wipes
In creating the packaging design for its new Brawny Giant Multi-Purpose
Wet Cloths, which are 50 percent larger than standard cleaning wipes,
Georgia-Pacific wanted a canister that would resonate with male and
female consumers alike — and stand out from other wipes packaging
on-shelf. The result is a rigid container with a gently tapered shape,
black lid and more generous proportions than competitors’ packages.
Snap-Quick reclosure comes to novel aseptic pouch
Bogota-based Alqueria, a leading producer of dairy products in Colombia,
recently launched 1-L stand-up pouches that are filled on an Air
Aseptic packaging system from Ecolean. The launch is significant not
only because it marks Ecolean's entry into the South American market but
also because Alqueria is among the first to commercialize Ecolean's
innovative reclosing feature. Ecolean’s SnapQuick reclosing device was
awarded a Scanstar 2014 packaging award in a competition that annually

To exempt or not to exempt: should the UK 5p charge apply to biodegradable bags?
When the 5p charge on single-use plastic carrier bags takes effect in
England in October 2015, the country will have finally caught up with
the rest of the U.K., in which a similar charge has already been
introduced. That much is clear. What is not yet at all clear is whether
or not single-use carrier bags made of biodegradable plastic will be
exempt from the charge or not. And even more to the point, what kind of
biodegradable plastic should be exempt, if there is to be an exemption?
