Food packaging driving growth in plastic film demand
Plastics Today
The U.S. demand for plastic film is expected to grow 1.5 percent per year through 2018 to 15.4 billion pounds, valued at $24.9 billion, according to a new study from The Freedonia Group. Accelerating growth in manufacturing output and disposable incomes bodes well for plastic film sales in a wide range of markets. Expected price stabilization stemming from elevated plastic resin supply will improve the cost-competitiveness of plastic film versus other materials. Increased penetration of pouches into new markets will also boost demand for plastic film.

For the last decade, as brands have worked to reduce their environmental footprint, bio-based alternatives to a number of synthetic materials and processes have become more common (take the flimsy compostable utensils you see everywhere, or even Coca-Cola’s Plant Bottles). Today, however, entrepreneurs and scientists are getting more creative in their exploration of the new design possibilities in alternatives to traditional materials, from bricks to plastics to foam insulation.

More and more it seems that parents of young children have become the innovators of today's more healthful, safer, and sustainable products. Greenology Products, Inc. — a maker of the first USDA Certified Organic household cleaning products and detergents, based in Raleigh, North Carolina — is no exception.

Unpacking packaging
Creative Review
Design trends approach like waves, gathering momentum and shifting shape over several years, before crashing on the beach to make way for the next big thing coming along. Are things changing? Design appears to be getting taken more seriously "at the top table." Perhaps because we live in a world of media fragmentation, where we all screen out the thousands of adverts, tweets and posts that crowd in on us. Savvy marketers have woken up to the fact one cannot however "turn off" or ignore packs if we want to get to their contents.

Clear stand-up pouch is a first
Packaging World
The 200-mL pouch for Engro's Y Frooter brand is the first Air Aseptic Clear pouch from Ecolean. Engro's previous experience with the Air Aseptic pouch was for its Olper’s brand milk. That single-serve milk package, however, was opaque, like all the other Ecolean pouches we've seen so far. The Olper's brand Y Frooter pouch is clear because it does away with the carbon black light barrier and the calcium carbonate (chalk) components that are part of the milk package. It retains an EVOH gas barrier layer, however, so that it has a six-month unrefrigerated shelf life.

Before the design process even begins it is critical to define your parameters: goals, requirements, budgets, timelines, and materials. Here are 10 questions to help you define & refine your creative parameters.

New floor cleaning bottle triples Weiman's sales
Packaging World
Color can be a great differentiator for product packaging. But in categories cluttered with a rainbow of bright bottles, sometimes a lack of color can be even more effective. In mid-2013, Weiman Products, LLC of Gurnee, launched a reformulated line of five floor cleaning products, replacing its previous lime-green bottle with a clean, white custom container. In addition, lackluster label graphics were supplanted with bright, engaging images and copy. The result: Weiman nearly tripled its sales of the product in the first month after introduction.
