An international team of researchers has developed special packaging that will help ensure mangoes reach their destination in prime condition. The researchers, from Canada, Sri Lanka and India, discovered that a natural compound called hexanal delays the ripening of mangoes. Top packaging school sets new strategy for growth by adding and cutting
Packaging Digest
In an industry that is suffering from a too-shallow talent pool, adding more teachers might signal that a healthy influx of new packaging professionals will be forthcoming to fill the industry's growing and urgent needs, which have amplified in recent years. More students are interested in a career in packaging these days. In the last couple years, the Michigan State University School of Packaging (SoP) has seen rapid increases in student numbers, from nearly 600 undergraduates in 2012 to about 700 in 2013 and almost 900 in 2014. Unfortunately, this growth came as resources were declining. In 2014, the student-to-faculty ratio was 73:1, up steeply from the 2012-2013 ratio of 58:1.

Designing soap packaging
Packaging Europe
These days most people willingly acknowledge that they are indeed influenced by packaging, particularly when focused through the lens of "brand." And of all the design disciplines, packaging comes closest to having an immediate effect on us in either a positive or negative way. Of course packaging must be functional in protecting the contents, but it is likely to be judged on the shelf or screen in an entirely emotional way. Choose this and reject that. With the new range of packaging for The Honeybell Soap Company, defining the qualities of the brand was of paramount importance.

If Apple made iMilk and Nike sold fruit: Designer groceries as art
NPR
It's hard to look at these stylish packages of citrus fruit, bearing Nike's iconic swoosh, without having the athletic company's famous slogan "Just do it" immediately come to mind. And that's precisely the point, says Israel-based designer Peddy Mergui. He says packaging tells a story, and can imbue consumer goods with value and prestige. And he created the Nike fruit as part of a project that reimagines everyday foods as designer groceries. The goal, he tells The Salt, is to explore how packaging manipulates our perceptions and desires.

Are we designing nutrition labels all wrong?
Fast Company
Nutrition labels have the best of intentions — to keep us healthy — but they sure don't have the clearest of formats. Four in 10 North Americans admit to no better than a "partial" understanding of them, according to a recent Nielsen survey. Serving sizes, percentages, grams, daily values — parsing out what it all means requires more math, time, and vitamin analysis than most of us care to apply on an empty stomach in a crowded aisle.
