Frito-Lay hopes to make some big noise with a quieter version of its biodegradable SunChips bag. The company introduced a biodegradable bag for the snacks in April of 2009 with a big marketing effort to play up its environmentally friendly nature as it was made from plants and not plastic and could break down in compost. L'Oréal Paris debuts a high-performance eye shadow for its Infallible product range, which promises to "fight the signs of make-up melt down" for up to 16 hours of wear, in a transparent 40- by 40-mm jar, injection-molded in PETG using a small but complex mold. The key feature of the jar is a perfectly flat exterior, achieved thanks to a special cooling system. More

Heinz Co. have announced a strategic partnership that enables Heinz to produce its ketchup bottles using Coca-Cola's breakthrough PlantBottle™ packaging. The PET plastic bottles are made partially from plants and have a lower reliance on nonrenewable resources compared with traditional PET plastic bottles. Alpla-Werke closes Spanish preform plant

Alpla-Werke Alwin Lehner has closed its PET bottle preforms plant La Carolina, Spain, blaming the closure on decreasing sales volume for bottled water in Spain. According to a Feb. 25 e-mail from spokeswoman Sabrina Ortner, machinery and some of employees of the La Carolina facility were transferred to other Alpla plants in Spain. The building is for sale. For many CPG companies, plastic strapping is an overlooked opportunity to improve the company's sustainability profile. That's true, even though most consumer packaged goods (especially non-durables) are delivered to retail unitized in stretch wrap. Novelis has announced that it has sold its printed confectionery foil packaging business at Bridgnorth, Shropshire, U.K., to Discovery Foils for an undisclosed amount. A total of 105 employees will transfer to, printing confectionery foil firm, Discovery Foils along with the assets of the business. The business produces multi-coloured printed foil used as packaging for confectionary products. More

Italian court throws out objections to plastics bag ban

Italian plastics processor association Unionplast has failed in an attempt to have new legislation banning non-biodegradable plastics shopping bags declared illegal. Unionplast, together with several processing companies, took their case to the country's highest administrative tribunal, the TAR of Lazio (the region covering Rome). They complained that the legislation, introduced at the beginning of the year, had been introduced "without respite" and was damaging the sector. More

New company CrystalPack is aiming to become the largest supplier of PET packaging in the Middle East after making its debut at the Gulfood 2011 show in Dubai. U.S.-based pharmaceutical manufacturer, Daiichi Sankyo Inc. (DSI), has acquired a packaging manufacturing facility in Bethlehem, Penn., from Amcor. Vice President of Operations at DSI Jeff Lane said the company's new 140,000 square foot facility, which was purchased for $10.25 million, will create 80 new jobs and help to package a range of the DSI's products including Benicar, Welchol and Azor. Del Monte bananas get second packaging skin
