Safeway Inc. has become the first U.S.-based retail grocery chain and manufacturer of private label merchandise to join The Sustainability Consortium in support of the organization's science-based work toward a more sustainable global supply chain. Flexible film packaging prices are set to rise in the U.K., as increases in raw material costs can no longer be absorbed by producers, says the Packaging and Films Association. PAFA, the trade association representing the 2 billion pounds U.K. plastic film and flexible packaging industry, has issued the price warning to the customers of its member companies because of a continuing upward trend in polymer prices. It said there have been "increases of up to 50 perfect in low and high point price differentials over the last twelve months for the principal packaging polymers including LDPE, LLDPE and PET." More

Court: Packager Bemis can buy Alcan from Rio Tinto

Flexible packaging maker Bemis Co. has received court approval for its acquisition of the Alcan packaging business it plans to buy from mining conglomerate Rio Tinto PLC for about $1.2 billion. The U.S. District Court in the District of Columbia approved the acquisition, Bemis said. Bemis expects the deal to close as soon as possible. More
