In the highly popular British drama "Downton Abbey," the fictional character Matthew Crawley undertakes to modernize the estate and make it more efficient and sustainable. A modernizing improvement has occurred on the estate on real life: U.K.-based Pacepacker Services has upgraded a bagging line at Highclere Castle Horse Feed Ltd., situated on the estate of the Downton Abbey drama, transforming a partly manual system into a fully automated line which now bags 1,500 tons of horse oats each year. Sabic adds bimodal HDPE blowmolding grades to product portfolio

Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic) is entering the bimodal high density polyethylene (HDPE) market, with plans to start commercial production this year. "Some processors are concerned about future supply of bimodal HDPE grades from Europe, so we think this is the right time for us to support the market by including bimodal HDPE blowmolding grades in Sabic's product portfolio," said Mario Scholle, business manager of bimodal HDPE at SABIC, in the news release.

EU project looks at cellulose-based packaging

A new European Union project is hoping to develop cellulose-based materials to replace oil-based materials in food packaging. As part of the Adcellpack project Centros Comerciales Carrefour, Distribuciones Juan Luna, Papelera de Brandia, Elastopoli Oy, Skymark and the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland will develop "a new renewable solution that will maintain the freshness of a product and assure its food contact safety."

San Jose, Calif., edges toward PS ban

The San Jose City Council voted to move forward with preliminary procedures to ban expanded polystyrene use for food containers in one of California's largest cities. The 9-2 vote calls for the city to put together an Environmental Impact Report, which officials say is expected to take several months, and then publicly consider recommendations for implementing the PS phaseout before final approval. The City Council plans to finalize the ordinance and vote on it some time this summer.

Markus DalPian, head of Netstal's business units for PET, CAP and PAC, told PlasticsToday that the Middle East and Africa represent an important market for the company in areas such as PET preforms, caps and closures in the packaging and medical industries. "Customer demand in the United Arab Emirates for premium beverage bottles and closures is high right now," DalPian said. "We serve a big number of customers in that area and we see strong growth in the future."
