Converting association creates nanotechnology division

TAPPI has created an International Nanotechnology Division to focus on nanotechnology for renewable materials, including the advancement of research and development for nanocellulose. The association says the new division will not only concentrate on developments for traditional forest-based products such as pulp, paper and building materials, but also on applications such as coatings, plastics and medical implants, among others. Based on a continuing economic recovery, the U.S. flexible packaging industry is expected to see sales grow to over $27.5 billion or about 8.1 percent in 2011, according to a state-of-the-industry presentation by William Burke, president and COO, Nordenia USA, and chairman of the Flexible Packaging Association (FPA). That is about $2 billion more than in 2010 and nearly $4 billion above the severe dip in industry activity during 2008. More

The European Commission is to assess whether a European Union (EU)-wide ban on plastic bags is feasible and a good idea in principle, an official has told PRW. A spokesperson for the Commission's environment directorate general Monica Westeren said: "There's a willingness to look into the issue. The next question is what are we going to do?" She said Brussels could launch a detailed feasibility study or more general report on whether an EU-wide ban on plastic bags was appropriate. More

Acme Bread of Berkeley, Calif., has switched to 40 percent post-consumer waste paper bread bags for all in-store retail packaging of its artisan breads. According to its packaging supplier, Excellent Packaging & Supply, Acme Bread is the first major wholesale bakery to use recycled paper in this way. The switch is expected to have a major environmental impact, by reducing the energy, water, and feedstock needed to make paper. More

Fast food restaurant giant McDonald's has set out a vision to eventually source all its packaging from sustainable sources. The company said that "over time" its suppliers would only provide agricultural raw materials for its food and packaging from land that has been certified as sustainable by an external third-party evaluation process. In 200 days' time Wales will become the first UK country to introduce a charge for 'single-use' carrier bags. A minimum charge of five pence will be introduced on Oct. 1. The move is part of the Assembly Government's goal of reducing the number of carrier bags given out to shoppers. More

The UK beverage can market has passed 9 billion for the first time, the according to new figures from Beverage Can Makers Europe (BCME). The 2010 statistics show that the UK market reached "an important milestone" last year and saw a market growth of 7 percent. Overall, the carbonated soft drinks sector grew by 12.3 percent and alcohol by 2 percent year-on-year. According to the BCME, the UK remains the largest beverage can market in Europe. More

Japan's 2011 earthquake to affect Aussie paper packaging supplies

A major Japanese paperboard packaging manufacturer has been forced to cease operations as result of damages caused by the earthquake and tsunami that devastated Japan. The Nippon Paper Group, the owner of Australian Paper, closed five of its facilities in Japan after finding damages to stock at its Ishinomaki, Iwanuma, Nakosa, Fuji and Akita mills. The company is currently investigating whether there are any damages to machines. More
