5 amazing innovative processes in food packaging By Archita Datta Majumdar Food packaging has been long been a concern for scientists and the food-and-beverage industry alike. With growing consumer awareness and health concerns, these packages have become even more of a focus, particularly when present-day food habits include more refrigeration and preservation than ever before. The latest developments in the food-packaging industry show how far we have come since then, and how these innovative developments promise to uphold both product and human safety in unison. A quick look at the latest solutions.
Study proves consumers have strong feelings for soft textures on packaging Packaging Digest Everyone agrees that the visual element of packaging design influences consumers. But what about the tactile component? Does a package's texture influence consumers' purchasing decisions? Results from a recent study indicate that fingertip appeal plays a surprisingly influential role in buying behavior. The study was conducted by applied neuroscientists at Brain House Institute on behalf of Derprosa-Ti, a unit of Taghleef Industries that makes Soft Touch film. This laminate is used to give boxes, bags and other packaging components a velvety texture.
Coating matters | Coating and casting for water filtration PFFC Water filtration is ubiquitous in our world, says coating expert Mark Miller. Water supplies need technological support to provide the volume necessary for our planet's population, and the fundamentals of air entrainment, entrapment, and rheology are critical to product success.
Digital printing launched as alternative in packaging Plastics News Australian packaging giant Pact Group has installed and commissioned a new digital printing platform it claims will revolutionize plastic packaging’s decorations in Australia and New Zealand. The $1.2 million dollar digital technology platform prints images and designs directly onto polypropylene, polystyrene and polyethylene packaging, providing a quicker turn-around time. Quality trials are in progress for PET products. Nothnagel said: "This decoration technology will allow our customers to quickly and repeatedly change the design of their packaging to take advantage of one-off promotional opportunities. Direct-to-container digital print is the latest generation in decoration technology."

Sustainable packaging best practices: Starting them young Packaging Digest Industry is strengthened each year as new, ambitious professionals enter the workforce. Unfortunately, the majority of educational institutions in the United States are not using their curricula to help stimulate a thriving sustainability industry. Sustainable actions by the everyday person are often adopted into routines at a young age, so it's important for schools to educate in an effective manner and for parents to share appropriate habits with their kids.
Looks matter: A century of iconic food packaging NPR We take the packaging our food comes in for granted. Yet many of the boxes, bags and bottles that protect our edibles were once groundbreaking — both in their design and in how they changed our perception of what's inside. Sometimes, packaging is so distinctive, it transforms food from mere consumer product to cultural icon. As Stephen Heller, author of more than 100 books on design and popular culture, says, "Coca-Cola is not a bottle of soda — it's Coca-Cola."

Ready meals in barrier trays Packaging World French ready meal producer Gendreau Group and its subsidiary VIF have launched a range of high-quality ‘country style’ ready meal items in a thermoformed barrier plastic tray. To further mimic the look of a casserole dish, the dual-colored trays — which are produced from a multilayer PP/EVOH/PP structure to give the retorted products an extended ambient shelf life of 12 months — have been designed with a red exterior and a black interior. The trays have a capacity of 350 grams as opposed to the more traditional market standard 300 grams to provide a larger family-size portion.
New Clear Code gets rid of the 'ugly black box' Packaging Digest It’s a packaging designer’s nightmare: Having to work around an ugly registration mark or the little black box where a laser code will go. The latter example is most unappealing when the carton is a pristine white or has another, more colorful, scheme to the graphics. Designers now have another option — one that still allows for a permanent laser code and provides high contrast with a black-on-white code. Clear Code from 3C! Packaging is a clear coating that changes color when hit with an industrial CO2 laser beam. The coating can be applied to a variety of packaging substrates.

The future of packaging: From brand design to biomimicry The Dieline If we were beings in the future looking back on the current state of society, our packaging and its design would prove a fantastic historic artefact, telling us something fundamental about the state of our world, consumption, peoples' needs and behaviors. Maybe – by being conscious of our wasteful acts of consumption today - we will have designed a better world. Or, maybe we will have starved the world of resources and be paying the price. Seismic and expedient change is now upon us whether we like or not. But progress cannot be realized unless all the big ideas are brought to life in an impactful and relevant way.
Cultured, yet flexible: Yogurt adapts to a variety of packaging Packaging Digest Flexible in formulation and applications, yogurt also demonstrates its applicability across a number of packaging formats in designs that range from the playful to the sophisticated using bottles, cups and pouches. Squeeze from Stonyfield is aimed squarely at a more youthful demographic and packaged in flexible pouches for convenience. It's part of a trio of pouched product lines for babies, toddlers and kids named YoBaby, YoTot and YoKids Squeeze, respectively, all with the tag line Love me. Hold me. Squeeze Me.
Greater efficiency and flexibility for less Packaging Today Injection stretch blow molding is one of the most common methods in the plastics industry for manufacturing hollow parts. There are two different manufacturing approaches: In the 1-step method, the preforms are inflated immediately after the injection process while still warm, while in the 2-step method, the preforms are cooled and stored after the injection procedure. Afterwards, they are reheated and inflated in a second production process. This method is used exclusively for PET and is quite frequently used in the beverage industry, for example.
