Industry chief welcomes £20 billion to save small firms

George Osborne's plan to offer struggling small and medium-sized firms £20 billion in cheaper loans to stop them going under is a move in the right direction, according to an industry expert. Under the plan, also known as "credit easing," the Treasury will use its high credibility on the international markets to fund banks' borrowing - as long as they pass on all the lower cost loans to smaller firms. Bonn's trams are to get a makeover - an injection of BASF's Basotect foam, which will add both sound absorption and thermal insulation to the current rolling stock. "The prices of new vehicles have risen rapidly in recent years," said project manager Alexander Wingen from Bonn's municipal works. "But our old trams are still structurally sound. A U.K. government-funded initiative is backing research and development of an innovative sheep's wool packaging for pharmaceuticals to help combat the global problem of more than 50 percent wastage in vaccines, as reported by the World Health Organization. Germany-based Weidenhammer said its plastic packaging business saw sales growth during the past year as the company announced a new IML plant in Bradford and a second production facility at the company's site in Zwenkau. Weidenhammer Plastic Packaging (WPP), which accounted for 10 percent of group sales, saw sales rise in 2011 and acquired the plastic injection moulding business from L&D Mouldings. More

Nestlé Waters North America has committed to incorporating 50 percent recycled content in previously virgin-material bottles for its Arrowhead brand of spring water, using food-grade PET from CarbonLite Industries' new recycling plant in Riverside, Calif. Nestlé will buy one-third of the $58 million plant's output. Separately, bottler PepsiCo has agreed to purchase 40 percent. More

Plasticos Castella invests more in Hungary

A Spanish packaging producer, which acquired an injection moulding plant in Hungary from the US Nypro group just over a year ago, has expanded capacity at the plant. Since taking over the facility in Nagyigmánd, family-run Plasticos Castella of Tortosa, Spain upgraded production, investing around €5 million installing additional equipment including 11 new injection moulding machines. It has also installed process automation equipment. More
