Plastic bag recycling reaches record high

The recycling of plastic bags and film reached a record high across the United States in 2008, continuing a growing national recycling trend. An estimated 832,394,000 pounds of post-consumer film (including plastic bags and product wraps) were recovered in 2008, according to the latest National Post-Consumer Recycled Plastic Bags and Film Report. This represents a 28 percent increase in bag and film recycling since 2005. More

M&H launches barrier food packaging for PET

M&H has created a new oxygen-scavenging product for PET containers which it claims maintains product quality and extends shelf life. The product is a blend of PET and an oxygen scavenging concentrate, which together create a barrier which stops oxygen from getting to the contents through the walls of the container. However, the company would not specify which specific additive it is using when contacted by European Plastics News. More

On April 1 the betacup will launch an online contest to engage creative thinkers in solving the disposable cup waste problem through open collaboration. PepsiCo is looking to cut almost 160,000 tons of packaging from its global portfolio by 2012 as part of a raft of health and environmental goals. PepsiCo chief executive Indra Nooyi announced the 'Performance with Purpose' goals. They cover areas such as nutritional information, eliminating the direct sale of full-sugar soft drinks to primary and secondary schools and reducing waste to landfill. More
