Packaging waste to be reduced by 4 billion lbs by 2020?

Survey results from the Grocery Manufacturers Assn (GMA) found that food, beverage and consumer products manufacturers anticipate that they will eliminate 4 billion lbs of packaging waste in the U.S. from 2005-2020. The 4 billion lbs represent a 19 percent reduction of the reporting companies' total average U.S. packaging weight. More

In February, H.J. Heinz Company announced that starting this June, it will use The Coca-Cola Company's plant-based plastic bottle to package its ketchup in the U.S. and then expand its use worldwide. At the BioPlastek 2011 Forum on Bioplastics Today and Tomorrow, Heinz vice president-Packaging R&D/Innovation Dr. Michael Okoroafor will reveal some of the motivating factors behind that move. More

Poland's Kalibra plans to expand packaging plant

A Polish flexible packaging manufacturer intends to expand production at its site in south-west Poland creating around 350 new jobs. Kalibra was granted official consent to proceed with a plan to enlarge its existing operation in the Kamienna Góra Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in Lower Silesia. The firm is installing a line to produce plastics packaging for the food industry, reports Palilz, the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency. More

Brussels considers Europe - wide plastic bag ban

EU officials are to consider banning all single-use plastic bags across Europe as part of plans to reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste. Janez Potočnik, the EU Environment Commissioner, told the European Commission's Environment Council that he intended to "look at all options" and launch an impact assessment on "the possibility of a Europe-wide ban on single-use of plastic bags." Boulder, Colo.-based snack food manufacturer Boulder Canyon Natural Foods may have cracked the compostable snack chip-package challenge.The company has launched a 7.5-oz compostable bag for five varieties of its All Natural Kettle Cooked Potato Chips that boasts the look and feel, as well as the sound, of its former, petroleum-based film bag, but contains more than 90 percent renewable material. John Watson and Co spends £3 million on new Gallus press

Independent label and commercial printer John Watson and Co has secured £3 million of funding to spend on a new Gallus press. The Glasgow firm has bought a Gallus RCS 330 machine and the money was secured from the Clydesdale Bank. The 10-color press will help meet increased demand in the drinks sector for self adhesive labels for whisky and spirits. More

Northern Indian state bans booze in PET bottles

The government of the Indian hill state of Himachal Pradesh has decided to do away with plastic liquor bottles beginning April 1. Last year the government imposed a partial ban on PET liquor bottles, according to Bhim Sen, principal secretary for excise and taxation, in a telephone interview from the state capital of Shimla. The aim, he said, is to reduce the use of plastics in day-to-day life. More



Visy, Amcor pay $95 million in damages

Australia's two packaging giants, Visy and Amcor, will pay a total of $95 million in damages to customers who called for a class action against the two companies after they fixed the price of corrugated cardboard boxes for a five-year period beginning in 2000. Visy will pay $31.7 million of the settlement and Amcor will pay $63.3 million. More

Gerresheimer acquires Brazilian packaging firm

Germany-headquartered pharma and healthcare systems manufacturer, Gerresheimer, is acquiring Védat, a Brazilian manufacturer of pharmaceutical packaging and closures. The company did not disclose the acquisition price but says the move will allow it to strengthen its position in the South American market.  More

In these cases we have science at its best, a predictive tool. A CD with an easy-to-run winding model is included with every book. However, one need not be a scientist to appreciate and use this text. Much of it is written in everyday language describing the machines we work with, the defects we see and the many measures of roll quality. It is a book that most plants with a winding department would want to have.
