Pepsi bottles get a makeover after 17 years

Pepsi is rolling out a new shape for its 20-ounce bottle for the first time in about 17 years. The new bottle has a contoured bottom half that appears easier to grip, and the wraparound label is shorter so that more of the drink is exposed.

Anchor Packaging adds building in Arkansas

Food packaging major Anchor Packaging Inc. has acquired a building in Jonesboro, Ark., that it is converting to a warehouse and in which it eventually will introduce manufacturing. Anchor, a major thermoformer and film extruder based in St. Louis paid an undisclosed amount for the 423,000 square foot building that boosts the firm's total manufacturing and warehousing space to more than 2 million square feet.

£200,000 fine for Smurfit over staff injury

The 25-year-old from Egremont, who has asked not to be named, lost four fingers and severed parts of two others in the incident at the Smurfit Kappa UK Ltd site at Richmond Works in Hensingham on Sept. 14, 2010.

Consultant warns of plastics slowdown in Mexico

January retail figures published by the Mexican government's statistics institute show practically zero growth in the sale of food, drink and other domestic items that use plastics heavily, according to industry consultant Eduardo de la Tijera Coeta. Sonoco Protective Solutions to open new molded foam plant in Central Mexico

Sonoco Protective Solutions, North America's largest manufacturer of molded foam components and packaging solutions and a unit of Sonoco, has announced that it intends to open a new manufacturing facility in Celaya, Guanajuato Mexico, to meet growing demand for its products. Sonoco will invest up to $10.5 million in the new plant and will create more than 200 new manufacturing jobs when the plant is in full operation.

German firm wins business award for re-sealable can lid

Munich-based Can2Close was founded in 2012 by Andreas Kleiner, Robert Kruetten and Moritz von Grotthuss. It said that its "c2" resealable end is a new mechanism that replaces the standard stay-on tab opening of beverage cans with a simple mechanism that is "easier to open and can be repeatedly sealed." China's EPS packaging ban lifts after lobbying

China seems set to end its 14-year-old ban on EPS takeout containers and tableware. Authorities on March 20 announced five reasons for the policy change. Meanwhile, the Chinese media reported that an alliance of ten EPS container manufacturers paid 4.5 million yuan to a Beijing law firm for lobbying and public relations efforts to lift the ban.

Recycling access for HDPE, PET containers crosses key threshold

For the first time, recycling access for two broad segments of packaging is sufficiently widespread to label these containers "recyclable" without the need for additional qualification or disclaimer. The American Chemistry Council announced at the Plastics Recycling Conference that recycling access for HDPE rigid cups, tubs, and containers and PET trays, clamshells, and cups has crossed the 60 percent threshold allowing brandowners that use those packages to label them as recyclable per Federal Trade Commission's guidelines.
