EC could rule against free carrier bags this summer

The European Commission (EC) looks set to recommend the banning of the free distribution of so-called single use carrier bags. A Green Paper is expected next month that will lay out the details of the plan. The proposal to charge for all carrier bags could be law within two years, claim insiders. More

Nestlé UK & Ireland has replaced the 48 tonnes of rigid plastic used in its mug eggs with FSC-approved paperboard, meaning its entire Easter collection is now recyclable. Budget 2012: Disappointment for plastics industry

The government's decision to increase plastic recycling targets is a blow to the plastics industry in the U.K., according to the British Plastics Federation. In the recent budget, the government confirmed that it will increase plastic packaging recycling by 5 percent a year to reach a business target of 57 percent in 2017. More




Danone to use bio-based PEF water bottles

Avantium, a research and development firm based in Amsterdam, is partnering with Group Danone to produce bio-sourced water bottles. Danone Research and Avantium have entered into a joint development agreement to produce bottles made from polyethylene furanoate - a furanic polyester developed by Avantium to be a 100 percent bio-based, recyclable alternative to PET. Acquisition boosts Amcor's Indian presence

Australian packaging manufacturer Amcor has bought the Indian flexible packaging business Uniglobe Packaging for $20.8 million. With the acquisition, Melbourne-based Amcor now owns five manufacturing sites in India. An Amcor statement said Uniglobe generates about $21 million in annual sales and serves large multi-national customers in the food, personal care and health care end markets. More

Design agency Bloom has redesigned the Wagon Wheels brand in a revamp that drops the biscuit's well-known Wild West look. The London agency has designed a new logotype in a bid to make the brand more relevant to today's children. Ed Hayes, Bloom Planning Director, said: "We knew that nowadays kids don't get as excited about cowboys and indians as their parents' generation." More

US-based Dart Container buying Solo Cup for $1 billion

Solo Cup has announced it is being purchased by fellow U.S. group Dart Container. Solo and Dart said they have an agreement for Solo to be sold in a $1 billion transaction. The deal is subject to regulatory approval and expected to close in the third quarter. Dart is the country's largest maker of foam cups. More

German plastic champagne cork maker sold

Wine packaging manufacturer Phillip Schneider recently purchased Pfefferkron, a German injection molder known for its plastic champagne corks and caps. Schneider acquired 100 percent of the outstanding shares of Pfefferkron in the transaction. Schneider, based in Ebernburg, Germany, manufactures wine and champagne products like bottle wire hoods, capsules, screw caps and Secco Cords - a natural fiber closure used in the presentation of sparkling wines, vinegar and oils. The company also manufactures machinery and shipping trays, crates and cartons. More
