FDA rejects petition to ban BPA in food packaging

The Food and Drug Administration has announced that it was denying a petition to ban BPA from all food and drink containers, saying the science does not show an immediate cause for such action. The action comes as a response to a petition filed in 2008 by the Natural Resources Defense Council claiming that the chemical poses a serious threat to human health. The agency did not close the door on future regulation. More

New biomaterials seem to be springing up like mushrooms after the rain. In fact, now there's a biomaterial that's actually made with mushrooms. It's made with the mushrooms' filament roots, called mycelium. German-based flexible packaging group Nordenia has agreed to sell its flexible intermediate bulk containers (FIBC) business to a management buyout team. No transaction price was disclosed. Richard Sievers and Michael Hans, who have worked at Nordenia's FIBC plant in Emsdetten, Germany, for over 25 years, formed a company called Empac to acquire the business. More

PET packaging forecast to grow to $57 billion by 2017

The global consumption of PET packaging will grow to almost 19.1 million tonnes by 2017 with a value of $57 billion, predicts Pira International in a new market study. Driven mainly by increasing demand in emerging and transitional economies, the market will grow 5.2 percent per annum with a focus on Asia Pacific, South & Central America, Central & Eastern Europe and the Middle East and Africa. Barrier PET bottles and jars for juices, milk, teas, beer, wine and food, are forecast to register strong growth over the period 2012-17. More
