Pharma industry seeks track-and-trace law

With the RxTEC Act, pharmaceutical supply chain members are proposing a phased-in approach to track-and-trace with a federal law imposing uniform requirements on all states. The act was developed by the Pharmaceutical Distribution Security Alliance (PDSA), manufacturers, wholesalers, and pharmacy chains joining to offer an alternative model for tracing prescription drug distribution. The bill thus represents a consensus approach from different supply sectors facing different requirements in a track and trace scheme. More

A plastics packaging plant on Merseyside is to close up with the loss of 100 jobs. Mayr Melnhof Packaging is to shut the plant in Bootle as it adjusts to current economic conditions. Staff at the plant, led by the Unite union, had earlier been involved in a long running industrial dispute over terms offered to 49 staff who had previously told they were going to be made redundant. Despite 2011 being a year of steep increases in raw material prices in Poland, plastics industry representatives say the local market will continue to grow in 2012, as several plastics manufacturers plan on expanding the capacities of their production facilities in the country. Coca-Cola Company's Simply Orange juice brand is not simply orange juice, according to a lawsuit filed against the beverage company. Instead, the lawsuit in an Illinois federal court claims that the product undergoes extensive processing, and is dependent upon added aroma and flavoring in a way not found in nature. In early March 2012, the U.S. Navy unveiled the reconstructed faces of two sailors whose remains were found on the USS Monitor, the revolutionary ironclad warship that fought the Confederate dreadnought CSS Virginia to a draw during the Battle of Hampton Roads on March 9, 1862. The Monitor sank 150 years ago in a severe storm and the skeletal remains of the sailors were found in the ship's gun turret during a 2002 recovery operation conducted by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the U.S. Navy. In the newly updated Residential Recycling Access for Consumer Plastic Packaging, December 2011, prepared for the Canadian Plastics Industry Assn. (CPIA) by CM Consulting, findings show that an increasing number of Canadians have access to recycling many different forms of plastic packaging, including nearly country-wide access to plastic bottle recycling and 91 percent access to recycling of household tubs and lids used for yogurt containers and other dairy products, up from 88 percent in 2009. Qantas snack supplier apologizes over in-flight maggot contamination

The manufacturer of the Qantas snack which was contaminated with maggots has issued an apology for the "utterly regrettable" incident, which it says was restricted to that particular packet. The Sydney Biscuit Company issued a media statement over the incident, explaining that the individual portion of Trail Mix which was found to have maggots inside was not part of a larger batch carrying the same problem.
