Shoppers say 'green' packaging is 'not my problem'

Shoppers show little willingness to make the effort on environmentally friendly packaging, looking for manufacturers and government to take the lead. Contrary to recent poll results by Green is Universal on consumer attitudes about green purchasing and recycling, a just-completed wave of shopper research on environmentally friendly packaging conducted by Perception Research Services (PRS) indicates that fewer shoppers agree that consumers should be responsible for recycling packaging than in 2009 (38 percent vs. 42 percent), with Midwest shoppers showing the least inclination (only 30 percent). More

Interpack, the world's largest packaging show held every three years in Dusseldorf, Germany, just finished its run with more than 2,700 exhibitors from more than 60 nations. Show organizers estimate there were more than 160,000 trade visitors. U.S. companies exhibiting at the show generally said they were pleased with overall sales leads and attendance, but they were disappointed with the number of North American visitors at the show. Remember the brouhaha last fall over Sun Chips' noisy "compostable" bag? It prompted Frito-Lay to withdraw the special bags on all but their "Original" flavor (which they retained as a show of support for their green strategy).  They've just come out with a quieter option. It's on-pack messaging tones down the composting message, and in doing so demonstrates, however counter intuitively it may appear, that they have actually learned some valuable lessons about how to do green marketing right. Europe starts consultation on plastic bag ban

Paper and paperboard giant M-real is the latest manufacturer to announce that it has raised the prices for its materials. It has increased the prices of its folding boxboard by 7 to 9 percent in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, effective for invoicing as of July 1, 2011.
