On May 25, Coca-Cola Enterprises (CCE) held its first Supplier Sustainability Summit and Awards Ceremony. The Summit comprised a series of workshops to discuss ideas and opportunities for collaboration between CCE and its suppliers to address sustainability issues. More

Cargal Ltd. subsidiary Plasto Sac Ltd. has signed an agreement to acquire polypropylene manufacturer Salina Industries  Ltd. for NIS 30 million. Salina general manager Jaime Guiterman, who founded the company in 1972, sought to ensure the future of the company after his children showed no interest in running it. Linking up with Cargal fulfills this objective, and Cargal will place professional managers in the company after an agreed-upon transition period.  More

The Chicago Cubs have partnered with Solo Cup Co., Allied Waste, Free Green Can and Levy Restaurants to introduce the "Real Fans Recycle" program at Wrigley Field. In total, the Chicago Cubs and its fans are expected to divert roughly 165,000 pounds of cardboard and plastic material out of the waste stream and back into the market in a recycled form each year, saving approximately 2,180 cubic yards of landfill space. Vitamin-enhanced water debuts in PET

This spring, Woodbury, N.Y.-based AriZona Beverage Co. is introducing nationwide a line of four vitamin-enhanced waters in PET bottles injection blow-molded by Constar. AriZona says the 20.5-oz bottles use Constar's DiamondClear oxygen-scavenging technology that protects the product within from oxygen, which can degrade the quality of the beverage and impair the nutrients inside. An automated intermediate bottle storage system at the Alpla plant in the U.K. uses robots to load plastic bottles from the blow molders into trays and also moves the stacks of trays automatically into and out of the storage area. Alpla is a worldwide plastic bottle manufacturer with 122 production plants. At one of its plants in the U.K., it recently installed a distinctive system for handling and storing plastic bottles that changes the traditional method of storing empty plastic and aluminum containers for future downstream processing. Unique sustainable deep freeze packaging set for European launch

A newly-developed deep freeze packaging said to be the first multilayer film to be made from renewable sources is set for a European launch, according to Germany based bioplastic producer FKuR. The firm said that McCain has been using the multilayer-solution made from FKuR resins by the German convertor, Dettmer Verpackungen to package a range of frozen fries in Germany since the start of this year.
