The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has robustly defended the use of plastic carrier bags in light of the latest Wrap figures that show 8 billion "thin-gauge" bags were issued in the U.K. in 2011, up 5 percent on 2010. When broken down the figures revealed a 22 percent fall in Wales, a 7.5 percent rise in England, an 8.1 percent rise in Northern Ireland and no significant change in Scotland over the same period. More

Poland's Plast-Box to launch PVC production

Polish plastic packaging manufacturer Plast-Box has announced plans to start producing PVC at its production facility in Słupsk, Poland. The Polish business will make plastic parts for roof gutter systems made by local company Gamrat. In the long term, Plast-Box aims to produce PVC components for other manufacturers, according to company representatives. The amount of the investment was not disclosed by the Słupsk-based firm. More

Nestlé calls for rethink on burning plastic waste

Nestlé's head of packaging for U.K. and Ireland, David Wiggins, believes that further lifecycle assessments are needed in order to fully identify the best use of mixed post-consumer plastics. "As a packaging scientist, when I look at a pile of mixed plastics waste I see a shed load of calories," he told attendees at the Resource Recovery Forum's summer conference. Wiggins said that recycling this material used more energy than could be generated by incineration. More
