Patterson & Rothwell serves up thinner PET dessert packaging pots

Lancashire-based injection moulder Patterson & Rothwell says it has developed a method for creating the thinnest wall PET on the market that will be used to create premium dessert pots for the food industry. Satisfying the need for high quality dessert packaging, which is also recyclable, the pots made from standard grade PET from Ultrapolymers are now between 0.8mm and 1mm, around 0.4mm thinner than the previous option.

Major firms making 'significant' progress on flexible packaging recyclability

Axion Consulting, Dow Chemical, Nestlé, Unilever and other global companies say they have made “significant” process in a project that aims to improve the recyclability of flexible packaging. Axion Consulting is leading the collaborative R&D project, called Reflex. The partners include: Amcor, Dow Chemical, Interflex Group, Nestlé U.K., SITA Holdings, Tomra Sorting and Unilever UK Central Resources.

Plastic packaging market to reach $370 billion by 2020

According to a recent report from Transparency Market Research, the global plastic packaging market was valued at nearly $260 billion in 2013 and is expected to reach a little more than $370 billion by 2020, growing at a CAGR of 5.2 percent over the forecast period between 2014 and 2020. In terms of volume, the plastic packaging market was worth 78,400.2 kilo tons in 2013.

General Mills: 'Less is more' with snack bars

Here's why Burger King revamped its packaging

Updated packaging design seems to be the latest trend among fast-food chains — McDonald's and KFC recently refreshed theirs — and earlier this month Burger King tapped Turner Duckworth's London office for a revamp of its own. The new packaging is part of an overall brand strategy for Burger King, which is trying to position itself more uniformly on a global scale, according to a spokeswoman for the brand.

Clondalkin produces PET lids for Weetabix launch

Lid manufacturer Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Bury (formerly Chadwicks Lids), has produced the high quality polyester lids for a brand new range of single serving Weetabix products. The three new products — Weetabix Crispy Minis Chocolate Chip, Weetabix Crispy Minis Banana, and Weetos pots — were launched in February. This is the first time Clondalkin Flexible Packaging has produced lids for Weetabix branded products and the first time these products have been sold in this convenient, breakfast pot format.

Burlap bags find new life as insulation for meal kits

Meal-kit delivery service Plated switches from plastic insulation liners for its shippers to ones made from recycled jute, a rapidly renewable material that is also compostable. Its goal is to have 100 percent carbon-neutral packaging by 2016. “With the rise of subscription services, the number of boxes people receive on a weekly and monthly basis is steadily increasing,” says Katie Horgan, Director of Operations and Logistics at Plated.

Bemis Co. to acquire rigid packaging operations in Brazil

Flexible packaging products maker Bemis Co. is set to buy South American rigid plastic packaging operations of Emplal Participações S.A., a Brazilian manufacturer of plastic packaging for food and consumer applications. This rigid packaging business, which includes two facilities in Brazil, recorded annual net sales of approximately $75 million in 2014. Terms of the agreement have not been disclosed and the deal is expected to be final by end of the year.

FDA revises proposed Nutrition Facts label rule

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on July 24 proposed including the percent daily value (%DV) for added sugars on the Nutrition Facts label of packaged foods, giving consumers additional information for added sugars similar to information they have seen for decades with respect to nutrients such as sodium and certain fats. The proposed rule is a supplement to the March 3, 2014 proposed rule on updating the Nutrition Facts label, under which the FDA proposed that food companies include added sugars on the Nutrition Facts label.
