A fire has destroyed an eastern Pennsylvania recycling plant and sent massive clouds of black smoke high into the air. The fire began Tuesday morning at Nicos Polymers Group in Plainfield Township, 55 miles north of Philadelphia. Two hundred firefighters spent much of the day knocking down the heavy flames at the 180,000-square-foot fabricated steel structure. More

Plastic bag decision in California Court sets CEQA precedent

The California Supreme Court last month ruled that private citizens and corporations alike can bring suit under the California Environmental Quality Act, addressing the standard for invoking the law in the most comprehensive manner since its inception. The July 14 decision upheld a 2008 proposal to ban single-use plastic bags in Manhattan Beach, in Los Angeles County, but more broadly, it addressed the "standing issue," or which groups and people are allowed to use the state's pre-eminent environmental law. U.K. drinks can and packaging company Rexam PLC recently said it was benefiting from increased consumption of canned drinks at home in Europe, the same trend that has caused a contraction in the U.K.'s pub and bar sector in recent years. Reporting better-than-expected results for the first half of the year, the maker of cans for beverages like Red Bull, Carlsberg and Heineken said the European market for drinks cans grew 6 percent in the period, and it had taken market share as it boosted volume by 7 percent. A large cluster for processing of PVC could soon be established in the Russian city of Dzerzhinsk (Nizhny Novgorod region), the center of Russia's chemical industry. Among the initiators of the project are Sibur-Neftekhim and Solvay, which earlier announced their plan to launch a joint RusVinyl project that is predicted to be Russia's largest integrated PVC production complex.
