Windows on Sainsbury's new juice carton help consumers measure out portions

In a U.K. first, Sainsbury's has launched new 1-L juice packaging with four see-through windows that allow for simple portion control and ensure that customers enjoy their five-a-day servings. Using the windows on the side of the carton as a guide, customers can quickly measure a glass of fruit juice that counts as part of a healthy diet. More

Roll N Blow makes debut at Interpack

A "world exclusive" process from Agami, a company set up in Vitré, France in 2009, debuted at Interpack 2011 in Düsseldorf in May. The Roll N Blow bottle thermoforming process was presented on the stand of French filling and capping machinery producer Serac, a 10 percent shareholder in Agami. Serac says the companies "work in a tight partnership." More

Nestle Singapore has launched the world's first free mobile application for iPhone and Android devices to help people recycle waste packaging correctly. 123Recycle, which was developed in collaboration with Nanyang Polytechnic School of Information Technology, enables consumers to scan product bar codes to access information on sorting the various elements of packaging for recycling. The system works with Nestle products in Singapore but is currently being updated to include other products. More

Boris Johnson, the Mayor of London, has added fuel to the plastic bag debate with talk of banning free carrier bags from the capital by the start of the 2012 Olympics. "Plastics bags are an unnecessary scourge on our environment and I've set out my ambition to make London a plastic bag-free city," he told the Daily Mail. "Whilst London doesn't have the powers to implement bans or charges, I am keenly following Wales's efforts to solve this problem." More

On June 16, a Paris tattoo artist inscribed a quick-response code - those square-shaped barcodes that link to websites, text, videos and other content - on the chest of a man named Marco, creating what's said to be the world's first animated tattoo. The process was streamed live on the Facebook page of Ballantine whisky and showed the artist using a smartphone to scan the code and launch an animated video version of the newly inked character on his subject's chest. The in.gredients grocery store, slated to open this fall in Austin, Texas, is touted as the nation's first "package-free, zero-waste grocery store." It has received widespread media coverage. Some sources have been strictly reportorial, but others have been downright praiseful. There's nothing objectionable about informing the public; however, subjective opinion is no substitute for critical thinking. It seems that in these times, it's automatically assumed that anything with an anti-packaging bias must be good for the environment. More
