Concern about climate change/global warming among online consumers around the world took a back-seat to other environmental issues such as air and water pollution, water shortages, packaging waste and use of pesticides, according to Nielsen's 2011 Global Online Environment & Sustainability Survey of more than 25,000 Internet respondents in 51 countries. La Seda de Barcelona, the Spanish PET resin and packaging group, has benefited from operational improvements which it started last year as part of a five-year restructuring plan. The company reported turnover of €577 million and operating profit (EBIT) of €5 million in the half-year to June 30. In the first half of 2010, LSB made an operating loss of €4 million. More

Ampac launches new unit-dose pack format

In a statement, the company said that the Butterfly Pack was developed for single-handed dispensing using a sachet format. It is manufactured from two high barrier films - a flexible top web and a semi-rigid forming web. To dispense, the pack is picked up by using one hand. According to the firm, by squeezing the opposite edges toward each other, the Butterfly Pack folds and "snaps" open providing an engineered and controlled release of the contents. More

Reducing, reusing and recycling are still big buzz words in plastics processing plants, and that's certainly true of Mack Molding, which has extended the concepts to its use of cardboard. The company's efforts to minimize cardboard consumption in its own packaging of components have been very successful, so much so that Mack, which has been designated an Environmental Leader by the state of Vermont, expects to simultaneously recycle six times more corrugated during the next 12 months, from its current 45,000 lb annually to 135 tons per year. Hi-Cone reduces packaging materials

Hi-Cone says it has reduced the volume of material needed for its six-pack multipack packaging by 17 percent by combining plastic with metallocene. The new polymer, LDPE+, allows for material reduction of up to 17 percent per unit, says the firm. This means that when compared with shrink film, Hi-Cone products use less than 40 percent the material for an equivalent pack size, it adds. More
