After making inroads in apparel and other markets, are packaged foods now ripe for radio-frequency identification applications? James Stafford, head of RFID, Avery Dennison, thinks so. He points to lower costs and the fact that most major retailers are either deploying or testing radio frequency identification technology, making it more of a case of “when” rather than “if” when it comes to RFID adoption for packaged foods.

Flexico leads battle to keep children safe

According to the Child Accident Prevention Trust; every year, around 21,000 under-fives attend Accident and Emergency units in the U.K., following poisoning incidents. 4,000 of these children are admitted to hospital. Fortunately most cases can be treated reasonably quickly, and the children do not suffer long-term effects, but some cases are tragically fatal. Packaging manufacturer, the Flexico Group said it is the first company to have a certified solution and they hope it will help to reduce these frightening statistics.

Transcontinental acquires US-based flexible packaging supplier for $80 million
Canadian Plastics
In a bid to expand the reach of its American business, Canadian printing giant Transcontinental Inc., has entered into an agreement to acquire Ultra Flex Packaging Corp., a U.S.-based supplier of flexible packaging, for $80 million. Headquartered in Brooklyn, New York, Ultra Flex employs close to 300 workers and generated $72 million in annual revenues and $12 million in operating income in its last fiscal year.

Packaging products register fastest growth in foodservice disposables

Demand for foodservice disposables in the U.S. is projected to increase 3.9 percent per year to $21.9 billion in 2019. Gains will be boosted by sustained revenue growth in the limited service restaurant segment, which accounts for about 80 percent of the total for disposables, despite representing only about half of overall restaurant revenues.

Mr Kipling introduces new packaging just 12 months after last redesign

The rest of Mr Kipling's cake and biscuit products are set to be overhauled in the coming months. Strong growth is forecast for in-mold labeling through 2019

The 2015 Labels study from The Freedonia Group Inc., indicates that in-mold labeling will grow the most rapidly of all primary-packaging label technologies through 2019, with stretch, sleeve and heat-shrink labels also experiencing solid growth. For IML, the study reveals an annual growth rate of 4.7 percent between 2009 and 2014 and predicts a growth rate of 5.4 percent between 2014 and 2019, based on U.S. demand. According to the study report, “Advances will be driven by the growing range of container types and applications using IML labels, coupled with advantages of superior graphics and increases in the number of companies with IML molding capability.”
