Developing world to drive consumer flexible packaging growth: study

Driven by strong growth in developing countries, the global consumer flexible packaging market is worth $58.3 billion in 2011 and is forecast to $71.3 billion by 2016, according to a report from market research firm Pira International. More

Coca-Cola Enterprises Ltd (CCE) and ECO Plastics have today revealed the name of their pioneering joint venture. A first for the UK recycling and beverage industries, the new business will be known as Continuum Recycling Limited. The name reflects the fact that the joint venture company will establish a continuous process for re-processing plastic bottles in Great Britain. Used plastic bottles will be recycled in Lincolnshire and the high quality materials produced will be re-used in new Coca-Cola bottles. More

Wrap funded recycling trials focus on plastics

The findings from a series of trials funded by Wrap (Waste & Resources Action Programme) indicate it could soon be possible to recycle almost all domestic plastic packaging waste. According to Wrap, despite more than 300,000 tonnes of plastic packaging being collected for recycling each year, more than a million tonnes still ends up going to landfill because of the difficulty of collecting and recycling films, the difficulty in detecting and sorting black plastics and the lack of high value markets for non-bottle plastics. Qualitest Pharmaceuticals issued a voluntary, nationwide, retail-level recall of multiple lots of oral contraceptives. The recall is being implemented because of a packaging error, where select blisters were rotated 180 degrees within the card, reversing the weekly tablet orientation and making the lot number and expiry date no longer visible. This packaging error and the potential for this error to have affected other oral contraceptive products resulted in the company issuing the recall of multiple lots. More

Italy's Serioplast invests €8 million in Poland

Italian plastics packaging blow moulder Serioplast is investing more the €8 million to construct a new plant near Lodz, Poland, creating at least 66 jobs. The group, based in Dalmine, Italy, has just won planning consent to occupy a 4.5 hectare site in the Kutno area of the Lodz Special Economic Zone. The new facility will be operated by the group's national subsidiary Serioplast Poland. More

There is no clear link between bisphenol A exposure and the onset of type 2 diabetes according to a study published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.
