Tetra Pak to make 1st all plant-based package

Packaging giant Tetra Pak International SA is rolling out what it said will be the industry's first carton made entirely from plant-based, renewable packaging materials. The Switzerland-headquartered firm said its new Tetra Rex carton, which will be commercially available in 2015, would be the first on the market to feature bio-based low density polyethylene films and bio-based high density PE caps, both being derived from sugar cane.

The chemical industry relies heavily on traditional sources of carbon — oil, natural gas, coal and biomass. These four substances are the starting point for around 40 basic chemicals and more than 40,000 chemical products. With its low cost and low toxicity, carbon dioxide is an attractive carbon feedstock for the synthesis of polymers, especially polycarbonates and polyurethanes that are primarily based on the condensation of highly toxic phosgene and aromatic or aliphatic diols.

The boxer brief is pouched in kraft paper, slipped into a cardboard box and embellished with a polka-dotted match-strike. Americans continue to recycle more plastic bottles

Plastic bottle recycling grew 120 million pounds in 2013, edging up 4.3 percent, to top 2.9 billion pounds for the year, according to figures released jointly by the Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers and the American Chemistry Council. The recycling rate for plastic bottles climbed 0.4 percent to 30.9 percent for the year.

Increasing shelf life in fruit and vegetables

A recent development in food packaging technology can delay the ripening of fruits and vegetables, offering a way to tackle the huge volumes of food waste, according to Cellresin Technologies. Ethylene is responsible for the ripening of fruit. The ethylene inhibitor, 1-MCP, has been used to stop ripening in cold storage facilities for some time, but Cellresin believes its technology is the first time it has been used in packaging.

Bright and lightweight aluminum cans are also called "naked" in the labeling industry, explains Sean Keeney, president/CEO of Walle Corp. The company is a leading label supplier to the beverage, food and household-goods industries — including ANSI. "We recommended a roll-applied shrink label for ANSI's Flurry Protein Shake as an alternative to a pre-printed can," Keeney says.
