The $1.2 billion market for primary packaging materials for microwaveable products is forecast to grow at a robust 9.4 percent annual rate through 2016 according to "U.S. Microwaveable Packaging 2012-2016," a newly released market research and intelligence report from Allied Development Corp., Burnsville, Minn. Firms setting up LDPE film venture in Thailand

Japan's Mitsui Chemicals Tohcello Inc. and Thailand’s SCG Chemicals Co. Ltd. are setting up a joint venture in Thailand to make linear low density polyethylene sealant film. The facility will open in early 2014 in Rayong, and will have capacity for 15,000 metric tons per year of Mitsui's T.U.X. brand film, a high-strength cast film designed to improve resistance to tearing and leakage. Ron Marsh honored for his services to plastics

The British Plastics Federation (BPF) has honored Ron Marsh, chief executive of RPC Group, with its Gold Medal for distinguished service to the plastics industry and the BPF. BPF president Philip Watkins, speaking at the federation's annual dinner, said: "Ron Marsh was once a graduate trainee at Metal Box at its Speke factory and over fifteen years rose to become plant manager. He moved to Reedpack and was the prime mover in the management buyout of RPC from Svenska Cellulosa in March 1991."

AEP Industries will purchase the assets of flexible packaging manufacturer Transco Plastics Industries Ltd. for about $5.3 million. AEP and its Canadian subsidiary, AEP Canada Inc., will acquire Transco's machinery, equipment and related assets. The company will gain about $30 million in annual net sales from Transco's former customers, according to a news release from AEP. More

The Levi's brand introduced a new collection of denim incorporating post-consumer waste, specifically recycled plastic bottles and food trays. Each Levi's Waste product will include a minimum of 20 percent post-consumer recycled content, or, on average, eight 12- to 20-ounce bottles per jean. Pepsi spending $10 million on plastic bottle project

Pepsi Beverages Co. will begin manufacturing plastic bottles at its Latham bottling plant. Pepsi will invest $10 million in a project to replace merchant-supplied plastic bottles with ones blow molded on-site, according to a news release from The Capital Region Economic Development Council, a state agency in the Albany, N.Y., region. Flexible packaging producers face "difficult economic environment"

As a result of what it called a "very difficult economic environment," French flexible packaging association Elipso has said the country's flexible plastics packaging producers have seen their business slow down in 2012 and expect an overall annual growth rate of 1 percent in both volume and value terms. By the end of this year, the sector is expected to have generated a little more than €8 billion in revenues. More
