Melbourne packaging technology company Cardia Bioplastics has developed a biodegradable plastic bag created from a blend of CO2 emissions and starch. Chairman Pat Volpe said the company has successfully completed a first production run of the carrier bags, known as CO2S - or, carbon dioxide plus a starch based renewable resource. More

H.J.Heinz's "Dip & Squeeze" pack is at the centre of a lawsuit in the US after the owner of an online food retailer said the food giant had adopted his idea for a sauce packet without compensating him. The Detroit Free Press (DFP) reported that David Wawrzynski is suing Heinz for breach of implied contract and unjust enrichment after it adopted Dip & Squeeze packaging format earlier this year. Carbon emissions label hits off in UK

A label on consumer products detailing their carbon emissions has become popular with shoppers in the UK, according to a study conducted by the Centre for Retail Research in Nottingham. The study, based on data collected by market research group, Nielsen, showed that nine out of 10 households purchased a product with a 'Carbon Reduction Label' in the last year.   More

The paperboard and paper packaging industry has been one of the most resilient sectors of Australian industry, according to a review by market research group IndustryEdge. The 2010 Pulp & Paper Strategic Review showed that the paperboard and paper packaging industry experienced a growth in both production and consumption in the 2009-10 year. Production in Australia during this period reached 1.969 million tons of all grades - an increase driven by the commissioning of Visy's second paper machine at Tumut, NSW. More
