EU flexible packaging market contracts by 3 percent
European Plastics News    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Europe's converted flexible packaging market declined by 3 percent in value terms to around €10.4bn in 2009, equivalent to 44.2 billion m² of materials, according to a report from leading consultancy PCI Films Consulting. The decline in sales value was primarily associated with the fall in raw material costs, especially in the first half of the year, which was reflected in lower prices to customers. Contrary to some expectations, however, demand in area terms actually increased, albeit by a marginal 1 percent, More

Flexible plastics converters are struggling to compete with the newly-enlarged Amcor since its takeover of Alcan's flexible packaging business, according to a new report. In its latest overview of the European flexible plastic packaging market, PCI Films said that Amcor's acquisition of the Alcan packaging business had been the most significant event in the market of the last year and had created "by far" the biggest converter in the European market with around 25 percent market share. As a result, PCI is predicting that the flexible packaging market will see a new wave of consolidation, with more medium-sized converters likely to be bought by the bigger businesses. More

The Maine Public Broadcasting Network    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Members of Maine's congressional delegation today welcomed a decision by the International Trade Commission, which ruled that American paper companies have been hurt by unfair competition from China and Indonesia. The unanimous decision means tariffs will now be applied to Chinese and Indonesian imports to offset government subsidies. The move is in response to a petition filed by U.S. paper manufacturers and their customers complaining about how hard it is to compete against subsidized coated paper imports from certain Asian countries. PRW.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Growth rates for polypropylene and other commodity resins should average 15-30 percent annually in India for the next several years, according to Kamal Nanavaty, cracker and polymers sector president with Indian plastics leader Reliance Industries. The Indian plastics sector consumes almost 18 billion pounds of resin per year. That number is expected to double in the next five years, Nanavaty said. Likewise, India's current annual BOPP film capacity of 1.1 billion pounds is expected to double during that same period. Nanavaty cited India's growing consumer retail base and changing lifestyles as reasons for this growth. More

Packaging Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Canada made progress in consumer packaging waste diversion last week by introducing a new recycling line at Groupe RCM's recycling facility in Québec. The launch is the end result of a three-year development and represents a $3.5 million investment, spearheaded by Tetra Pak as part of its larger, aggressive national recycling plan. The new recycling process breaks down carton, plastic bag and film waste into a thermoplastic resin which will be used in industrial and commercial manufacturing. More

Krones' Variopac machine nests containers, brings efficiencies
Packaging World    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Nested packs might be a packaging option of the future for consumer packaged goods companies. Konie Brenneman, marketing manager at Krones Inc., says the advantages include improved pallet efficiency in which water bottles, for example, interlock with each other in a film-wrapped configuration. A trayless, nested-bottle arrangement is possible with the Variopac Pro TFS 70, which Krones is introducing at PACK EXPO. Inside the Variopac, nonreturnable containers no longer are packed in a linear configuration. Instead, they are offset by half a bottle diameter to creak a pack. More

PRW.com    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Beverage packaging solution specialist Sidel has launched technology to produce fresh milk bottles in HDPE using injection stretch blow moulding (ISBM) for the first time instead of extrusion-blow moulding (EBM). "SafeSense" HDPE bottles are claimed to be around 20 percent lighter than extruded equivalents for the same level of functionality, with the same capping quality as PET. An aluminium sealing lid is not needed, says Sidel. With its HDPE-injected cap, SafeSense offers a single-material package, claimed to give a significant edge in simplifying recycling. More
