Market for stand-up pouches in US sees dramatic growth

The U.S. stand-up pouch market has seen dramatic growth over the past five years, increasing by 50 percent in unit volume terms to approaching 17 billion units in 2013. Beverages and pet food are the largest end use categories, each accounting for one-third of demand, closely followed by human food applications with around 30 percent share.

Aluminum can is still the most recycled beverage container

Industry recycling of aluminum beverage containers in the U.S. continued its decade-long upward trend in 2012 with a rate of 67 percent, according to data released by the Aluminum Association, the Can Manufacturers Institute (CMI), and the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI). This is the highest recycling rate since the early 1990s and is the second highest rate reported since the survey began in 1972. The new rate marks progress toward the industry's goal of 75 percent recycling by 2015.

EPA fines Pretium Packaging

Pretium Packaging LLC has agreed to pay more than $75,000 to settle alleged violations at two plastic bottle manufacturing facilities, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced. EPA said the Chesterfield, Mo.-based company violated the Clean Air Act's risk management program requirements at its facility in Manchester, Pa., and a now-closed facility in Muscatine, Iowa.

Amcor launches Orora following demerger

Issaquah, Wash., voters to decide fate of plastic bag ban
Plastics News
Voters in Issaquah, Wash., will have an opportunity to repeal the city's plastic bag ban in early 2014. The vote comes after Save Our Choice, a group opposing the measure, filed a petition with Issaquah's City Council asking for a full repeal of the measure, which bans plastic bags and puts a 5-cent fee on paper bags. The City Council unanimously voted to hold the special election on Feb. 11, according to online video of the meeting.

Ecopax paying fine for air emission violations

A manufacturer of food-grade polystyrene foam containers has agreed to pay a $192,000 fine for alleged air emission violations. The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection said Ecopax LLC "failed to properly monitor and control air emissions from May 2008 through May 2011." The company agreed to pay the fine and sign a consent agreement.
