WTO panel rules against US country-of-origin labels

The world's top trade body ruled that U.S. "country-of-origin" labels on cattle and hog exports from Canada and Mexico violate international rules, a move that could lower prices on those exports. In late 2009, the Geneva-based World Trade Organization opened an investigation into U.S. labeling rules at the request of Canada and Mexico. More

100 projects identified to reduce plastics-based marine litter

The American Chemistry Council's Plastics Division joined plastics industry leaders from across the world in Dubai in mid-November to create a global action plan for solutions to marine litter. The resulting plan describes actions to be taken and progress to be reported by signatories in 2012. As of Nov. 17, approximately 100 projects have been identified, which will be carried out in 32 countries, in addition to the global activities supported by all signatories. More

Czech Republic-based Nachod Brewery is supplying its Primátor range of beer in recyclable PET kegs from Petainer. The brewery says it chose the Petainer keg partly because of its low weight. Bemis closing Flemington, NJ, plant in January; 54 layoffs expected

Bemis, the company famous for its textile bags and flexible packaging, is shuttering its Flemington, N.J., facility on Route 12 early next year, a move that will result in 54 layoffs. The facility, which opened in 1956, bisects the borough and Raritan Township. The closure is part of the company's overall plan to consolidate after missing its performance numbers by 30 percent, township Mayor John King said at a recent Township Committee meeting. More
