2014 foodservice packaging trends

This year's foodservice packaging trends focused on both the environmental attributes as well as the "look" of containers. Demand for products that can be recycled and/or composed continued, with perhaps a greater interest this year in compostable products, which could be the result of a growing number of food waste diversion issues throughout the foodservice industry.

Survey says: Consumers hate throwing away sticky products trapped in packaging

And as proof that consumer hate waste, has released survey results that clearly demonstrate consumers' intense dislike of product waste and the extreme measures many of them take to get the last few drops of everything. Apparently consumers hate waste so much they are even willing to switch brands for ones with packaging that allows them to easily get their products out. LiquiGlide's survey of more than 1,000 consumers asked participants about their attitudes and habits related to the packaging, use, waste and disposal of sticky consumer goods.

Film manufacturers pushing, again, for non-resin price increases

For the third time in 2014, major polyethylene film makers are seeking non-resin price increases for their products. AEP Industries Inc., Sigma Plastics Group and Berry Plastics Corp. each recently have sent letters to customers indicating price increases effective Dec. 1. Hackensack, New Jersey-based AEP and Lyndhurst, New Jersey-based AEP each are seeking increases of 4 percent. The increase amount cited by Evansville, Indiana-based Berry is 3-5 percent.

Consumers reveal perceptions, and pet peeves, of e-commerce packaging

As online sales of consumer goods continue to grow, so does demand for packaging that meets the shipping requirements of those goods. A recent Harris Poll conducted on behalf of cushioning leader Sealed Air examines packaging’s role in online sales. "Without the right packaging materials in place, online retailers face increased risks of damage during fulfillment and delivery that can not only elevate costs during return and repair, but significantly impact consumers' perceptions of that business," says Ken Chrisman, president of Sealed Air’s Product Care Div.

EU confirms plastic bag reduction deal

National governments will have to either reduce average lightweight plastic bags consumption to 90 bags per person per year by 2019 and 40 by 2025 or ensure that, by 2018, all bags are charged for. A second unanimous vote was needed because the original agreement had been opposed by the European Commission, the EU's executive.

Child-resistant packaging meets regulations and consumer needs

Child-resistant packaging may be middle-aged; it dates from the passage of the U.S. Poison Prevention Packaging Act of 1970. Nevertheless, development efforts continue. In fact, a CR design developed by Ecobliss and marketed by Locked4Kids was recognized as the Best Innovation in Packaging in the Pharma Awards competition at CPhI Worldwide in October 2014 in Paris. The reclosable Locked4Kids carton consists of tear-resistant laminated paperboard and features a polyethylene terephthalate blister tray that locks in place.

Zip-Pak targets India and emerging market growth

Zip-Pak is putting its efforts towards emerging markets such as India and revealed it has just picked up two major customers in the country. The firm said it is seeing organic growth of 3-5 percent in the EU and 10-20 percent in the emerging markets. It set up a zipper manufacturing plant in Brazil in 2011 where growth is around 10 percent and has a presence in Russia, China and Turkey.
