Coral Products reports healthy underlying growth

Haydock-based injection moulder Coral Products has reported that sales for the six months to Oct. 31 rose 29 percent to £8.66 million with an underlying operating profit of £115,000 compared with a £319,000 loss for the same period last year. However, the company has had to shoulder the costs of its acquisition of Interpack and charges resulting from its listing on the AIM market index. These combined to create a one-off hit of £443,000 meaning that Coral had losses before tax of £356,000. More

Sanner expands in China and Indonesia

Sanner, the German company that specializes in desiccants, closures and other plastic packaging products, has expanded its plant in Kunshan, China, and opened a sales office in Indonesia. The Bensheim-based company opened the Kunshan plant in 2000. The facility now employs nearly 100, making tubes and desiccant closures and custom packaging. More

Online sales are soaring this holiday season. Cyber Monday saw the heaviest online shopping day ever recorded, according to research firm ComScore Inc., with $1.25 billion in online sales - a 22 percent increase over last year's record of $1.03 billion in online purchases. And online retailers didn't have to wait until Cyber Monday to see a spike in sales. Online sales were up 24.3 percent on Black Friday and 39 percent on U.S. Thanksgiving Day, according to IBM's Coremetrics data unit. More

During a week-long celebration held early in 2011, Ohio Wesleyan University deployed packaging to help commemorate Jackie Robinson's signing by Branch Rickey (OWU-'67) as the first African-American baseball player into Major League Baseball (MLB). Bad news for PVC packaging continues to mount as Hasbro plans to eliminate PVC from core product packaging beginning in 2013. The U.S.-based firm has already begun to phase out PVC from some packaging. "At a time when consumers have an abundance of choices, we hope our track record of innovation and corporate citizenship - including our focus on sustainable packaging and product safety - will give shoppers one more reason to choose our products during the holiday season and throughout the year," stated Hasbro President and CEO Brian Goldner in a news release. Details of the transaction were not disclosed. This transaction does not impact Bemis' earnings per share guidance for 2011. More

Guidelines reflect a holistic, life-cycle approach and are based on the common principles of 'reduce, reuse, recycle.' Global spirits, wine, and beer company Diageo has published its first Sustainable Packaging Guidelines. According to the company, the guidelines reflect its commitment to a holistic approach to reducing its overall impact on the environment across the whole value chain "from barley for the breweries to the bottle in the bin," and at the same time supports its customers and consumers' desire for more sustainable living. It is a book that most plants with a winding department would want to have.
