Bemis to close Newark, NJ, factory, eliminate 124 jobs

Bemis says it will close its factory in Newark and idle 124 workers, a reminder that employment cutbacks still haunt the Bay Area manufacturing sector. The company makes packaging products and other materials. Bemis wants to shift production from smaller plants such as the one in Newark to a reduced number of factories that each tend to be larger and employ hundreds of people. More

Linpac looks to design to offset materials price hikes

Linpac Packaging says it will be developing lower cost products in order to help offset the recent rises in materials prices. According to the company, the cost of PET and PS rose by approximately €100 per tonne and Linpac Packaging expects the cost of all polymers will continue to increase through the first half of 2012. Diversapack to close Monroe, Ohio, plant

Diversapack of Monroe, LLC is expected to close its doors March 5, according to a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act Notice released by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services on Jan. 4. The closing of the Monroe, Ohio manufacturing plant will result in a mass layoff of 173 employees and no union or collective bargaining agreement is in place. The closure is expected to be permanent. A specialist in the delta robot market, the firm believes it can differentiate itself from the already established vendors of robotic packaging solutions because, as general manager Gregory Lee Brasic puts it, "We don't try to tell you what control systems you should use. Our goal is to be compatible with all major control system manufacturers' offerings. We leave the decision about which control system is most appropriate for your application up to the people who would know best ... you and your design team members. We will of course pair developers up with resources from their control system vendor of choice, but we are in the business of designing, building, and marketing the best delta style robots we can produce." Sansetsu, U.K., based in Milton Keynes, admitted breaching the Regulation of Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations during a hearing before Milton Keynes magistrates. More

NAFTA flexible packaging to hit $22 billion

The market for converted flexible packaging in the NAFTA region (the U.S., Canada and Mexico) will experience 3.5 percent growth per annum to reach $22 billion by 2015, according to a new report from PCI Films Consulting. In 2010, the NAFTA market was worth $18.3 billion. It grew 4 percent per annum between 2005 and 2008 but the global financial crash caused a drop of 6-7 percent in 2009. More
