Non-bottle rigid plastics recycling up 72 percent

In 2010, nearly 820 million pounds of post-consumer rigid plastics were collected for recycling nationwide, an increase of 72 percent from 2009 and 154 percent since 2007. The American Chemistry Council (ACC) has released a new report showing a significant increase in the collection and recycling of non-bottle rigid plastics in the U.S. The report, prepared by Moore Recycling Associates, Inc., found that in 2010, nearly 820 million pounds of post-consumer rigid plastics were collected for recycling nationwide, an increase of 72 percent from 2009 and 154 percent since 2007. Mars Inc., the company behind Snickers, Twix, Skittles and other popular candy brands, has announced it will stop selling chocolate products more than 250 calories in them by the end of next year. Amcor has reported that first-half profit fell 9.4 percent to $204.9 million year-on-year and said it continues to pursue growth opportunities in emerging markets. Net profit dropped to $204.9 million in the six months to Dec. 31, down from $226.1 million, the packaging giant said in a recent statement. More

Plastics packaging group Huhtamaki posted a 10 percent fall in profits to €121 million in 2011, but the Finnish group has expressed its pleasure at its sales growth. The group's net sales increased by nearly 5 percent from €1.95 billion in 2010 to €2.04 billion in 2011. More

The Toxics in Packaging Clearinghouse provided test data that led to a $15,000 settlement between the State of New Hampshire and PetSmart Inc. TPCH testing discovered cadmium above limits set by state regulation in flexible PVC packaging of several PetSmart products. Test data was shared with NH state officials, who subsequently collected additional data to support the enforcement action. More

The United Arab Emirates' Ministry of Environment and Water (MoEW) has said that all suppliers and manufacturers of bags to the country will need to be using oxo-biodegradable additives from next year. The official notice covers not just plastic bags, but also a range of packaging and disposable items such as semi-rigid plastic packaging for food and consumer-durables, waste bags and bin-liners, and shrink and pallet wrap amongst other items. French BPA ban may harm US food exports - USDA

The proposed French ban on Bisphenol A (BPA) in food packaging would jeopardize exports of food products to France, according to a new report from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA). The report says the ban, which is waiting to be examined by the French senate, would affect sales of beverage products such as beer and juice. France is the second largest market for Florida juices, with sales totaling $21 million, says the USDA. More

Plymouth, UK, food sachet firm goes into administration

A plant that produces dairy products in individual laminated plastic sachets and containers has gone into administration after hitting financial difficulties. The Quadra Foods plant in Plymouth, U.K., part of the Farmright Group, is now in the hands of administrators Grant Thornton. Eighty of the 120-strong workforce have been laid off as the administrators search for a buyer for the company. More
