As more places around the world seek to ban or limit plastic bags, Malaysia's plastics industry association believes it's persuaded the national government to look at alternatives beyond more bans. The Southeast Asian nation of 27 million people last year enacted a one-day-a-week ban on free bags in stores, and one state government has gone further and prohibited free bags at retailers seven days a week.

Commercialized in 2009, Accredo specializes in the manufacture of coextruded barrier films, towel & tissue overwrap film, shrink-bundling film, laminated, printed and unprinted roll stock, pouches and wicketed bags. "We're expanding in all the segments we identified as our target markets and need to add significant capacity to keep up with growth," states Rex Varn, executive vice president of Accredo.

Multinational consumer packaging company Rexam has announced its results for the first half of 2012. Underlying profit before tax (including the personal care division which Rexam intends to sell) was £225 million. The healthcare division's underlying operating profit was down from £36 million to £27 million. Total beverage can volume was up 6 percent, producing an operating profit for this division up by 9 percent.

Cost reduction is the key driver for packaging innovations in 2012, according to the annual Packaging News/easyFairs survey on buying trends. The survey of more than 300 packaging buyers showed that 51.5 percent saw cost reduction as one of their two biggest drivers for innovation, ahead of differentiation, selected by 36 percent, and quality enhancement, cited by 34.6 percent of respondents.
