Austrian researchers develop biological method for PET decomposition

Austrian researchers have developed a method of using fungi and produced enzymes to split polyethylene terephthalate (PET) material into its initial state, enabling the recovery of all individual components, says the Austrian Center of Industrial Biotechnology (ACIB). Enzyme is a special protein that acts as biological catalyst, for example, bacteria and fungi in the nature can break down long chain molecules.

Flexible packaging company Huhtamäki Oyj has an agreement to buy Brazilian hygienic films manufacturer Prisma Pack Indústria de Filmes Técnicos e Embalagens. Espoo-based Huhtamäki said August 12 that it will pay €20 million euros for Prisma Pack. "With Prisma Pack we gain a strong position in hygienic films in the fast growing Brazilian market and improve our ability to serve our global customers in South America," said CEO Jukka Moisio, in a news release. RPC has sold its Bramlage Verschlüsse wines and spirits closures manufacturing operation in Lohne, Germany, to Rauh. The value of the assets sold was €2.9 million. RPC Bramlage Verschlüsse's product range includes natural and synthetic corks as well as aluminium and special closures. The company achieved sales of €7 million in the financial year 2010/2011 with an Ebitda of €0.3 million. More
