Sustainability concerns are manifesting in a variety of ways in personal care product packaging, according to
a new study from PMMI, "2010 Personal Care Package Market Assessment." The market for personal care packaging in North America is expected to total between $70 billion and $80 billion in 2010. Currently, plastics (59 percent) and bottles (41 percent) dominate package materials and formats, respectively.

A bioplastics research firm linked to Imperial College London has received a £3 million funding boost for its work in developing polylactic acid (PLA) production. Plaxica is backed by Invesco Perpetual, NESTA, the Carbon Trust and Imperial Innovations that have invested a further £3 million to help the commercialization of a "lower-cost, but stronger, higher-quality polymer."

Sales and operating profit improve in first half of 2010 - Stable development in flexible packaging

Operating profit (EBITDA) at Constantia Packaging increased by 17 percent year-on-year to €160 million in the first six months of 2010. Profit margin increased to 16.3 percent from 16.1 percent in the same period of 2009. Sales increased to €981 million, compared with €847 million in the first half of 2009.

The Maine Board of Environmental Protection on Thursday took public testimony on a proposal to ban the sale of baby bottles and other reusable food and beverage containers made with the chemical
