New Health Canada study supports BPA safety in metal packaging

As part of its research commitment on bisphenol A (BPA), Health Canada released the results of a new survey of BPA exposure levels in a variety of soft drink and beer products. According to industry association North American Metal Packaging Alliance (NAMPA), the results from this latest government survey indicate that foods and beverages packaged in BPA epoxy resin coated metal cans do not pose a health risk. Paper giant M-real has announced further price rises, this time for label and flexible packaging materials. The Finnish group said that it would increase prices by between 5 percent and 6 percent for one-side coated label and flexible packaging papers that are produced at its Simpele mill in Finland and its Zanders Gohrsmuhle mill in Germany. Demand for plastic containers in the US is set to grow 4.3 percent annually to $30.4 billion (€23.9 billion), creating demand for 13.9 billion pounds (6.3 billion kilos) of resin, according to a new Freedonia report. British Polythene Industries (BPI) has reported a 44 percent rise in pre-tax profit as its restructuring helped offset the impact of polymer price increases.
