Mark Rosekind, the Obama administration's choice to head the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, spoke Dec. 3 before a Senate committee, saying that the agency would be more aggressive on behalf of consumers under his leadership.More

TIA releases 'Tire Safety Starts with Tire Selection' video

The Tire Industry Association has released "Tire Safety Starts with Tire Selection," the latest in its "Tire Safety Starts with…" safety video series. "Tire Safety Starts with Tire Selection" covers the information consumers need when selecting replacement tires, TIA said. The video explains the importance of following the vehicle placard when selecting a tire, as well as the basic differences between summer, winter, all-season and all-terrain tires.

Which cars go to the repair shop least and boast the lowest repair costs? Honda tops this year's manufacturer rankings by auto repair site CarMD. Last year's winner, Hyundai, finished second. Toyota ranked third this year. The three Detroit-based companies finished next, with General Motors fourth, Ford fifth and Chrysler sixth. Kia, Nissan, Mazda and BMW rounded out the top 10. CarMD gathers repair reports annually from its network of mechanics, and the 2014 survey covered work done to 40,400 vehicles of model years 2004 to 2014. More

US small business optimism highest since early 2008

Small-business owners in the U.S. are more optimistic now than at any time since early 2008, according to the latest Wells Fargo/Gallup Small Business Index. The overall Index score rose to 58 in November, up from 49 in July. The Index was last this high in the first quarter of 2008 when it was at 83. Despite these significant gains, the overall Index is still well below pre-recession levels.More

Honda: 3 million more cars need airbag fix in US recall

Honda Motor Co., the biggest customer of airbag maker Takata Corp., said about 3 million more of its vehicles will need to be fixed in the U.S. after it widened a regional repair campaign to the entire country. The carmaker will add the vehicles to existing safety improvement campaigns that have been focused on high-humidity regions, Ben Nakamura, a spokesman for Honda, said by phone. The company had earlier disclosed the decision during a U.S. congressional hearing without saying how many cars would be affected.More

Alleged San Antonio tire thieves caught in action, charged with felony theft

A San Antonio-area man was arrested, accused of felony theft Dec. 6. Police believe he is responsible for stealing at least $10,000 worth of tires since November. The most recent theft was just before 5 a.m. Dec. 6. Police believe the man stole four or five tires from Freeman Decorating off of I-35 with the help of a woman.More
