Independent 2013 survey shows veterans highly satisfied with VA care

The American Customer Satisfaction Index, an independent customer service survey, ranks the Department of Veterans Affairs customer satisfaction among Veteran patients among the best in the nation and equal to or better than ratings for private sector hospitals. The 2013 ACSI report assessed satisfaction among veterans who recently have been patients of VA's Veterans Health Administration inpatient and outpatient services.

Chair of the American Academy of Physician Assistants Health Disparities Work Group Jim Anderson writes: "After 14 years as a physician assistant, I'm only now starting to understand the unique origin and needs of PAs that are veterans of military service. I'm not a vet, and although I have worked hard to wrap my brain around the special needs of my military veteran colleagues, I must admit I have not fully grasped this issue. Although the American Academy of Physician Assistants has been built on the backs of military PAs, a big challenge for many of the very PAs who created our profession has been figuring out how to fit back into it after leaving military service"

Yes on Prop. 41 for veterans housing

The Veterans Housing and Homeless Prevention Bond Act of 2014 would authorize the repurposing of $600 million in bond funds that have been sitting idle in the California Veterans Farm and Home Loan Program. Funds in that program are supposed to help vets buy single-family homes, mobile homes and farms. However, it's little used. Vets need much more help finding affordable housing, such as apartments.

Associate professor of visual arts at Fordham University Mark Street writes: "I have followed with interest the national conversation about the important role of colleges in easing the transition of military veterans into the classroom. I applaud efforts like the Post-9/11 GI Bill, the Yellow Ribbon program and a newly formed student-run Armed Forces Group at my own university to help veterans integrate into the academic community and graduate. But I hope those discussions, focused on assisting the vets and worthy as they are, don’t eclipse the value these students bring to higher education."

Gulf War illness: Thousands who served still report mysterious symptoms

Army veterans Michael Patiño and David Garcia, who served in the Persian Gulf during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, say they still suffer health problems related to their service in the war.
Garcia, a retired warrant officer, began to experience unusual ailments during Desert Shield, the advance operation for the war in 1990, and was medically evacuated shortly after his unit's trek through the infamous "highway of death" in Iraq.
