Industry caution could force transport price hike
Procurement Leaders    Share   Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Transportation executives across the shipping world are cautious about the prospects for economic recovery in 2010, a stance that could lead to a hike in transportation costs, new research warns. The special Annual Review & Outlook edition of The Journal of Commerce suggests transportation carriers plan to restrict any additions of new capacity for the rest of the year until there are clear signs of real economic growth. Automating incoming inventory management reduces loss
Plant Services    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Is the inventory used to start your supply chain being given the attention it needs? Unlike fixed assets, inventory, especially raw materials or components used in manufacturing, sometimes is treated as another cost of doing business. Consider this: Companies ranging in size from local machine shops to Fortune 100 companies collectively spend billions of dollars each year to try to prevent losses in order fulfillment, but they don’t know when inventory needed for production was received, where it was placed, how old it is, or what its present value is. Conveyor makers say worst is behind them
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The early signs, at least, are promising. After a dismal 2009, manufacturers of conveying and sortation systems once again are getting what they believe are serious inquiries from potential customers about new installations. As far as the manufacturers are concerned, the rebound can't happen soon enough. Last year was among the worst the industry has seen in some time. More

Ethics issues at heart of supply chain management
SupplyChainBrain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ann Grackin, chief executive officer of ChainLink Research, traces the evolution of ethical behavior throughout the supply chain. But is the trend motivated by a desire for profitability, the law, or just good intentions? Few companies deliberately set out to commit unethical practices, Grackin said. But the quest for competitive advantage can have a serious impact on the way products are made and how workers are treated. More

In boom times or bust, 'green' is smart business
DC Velocity    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
There always will be those who see the green movement as more fad than force of change. And the booming business in green conferences, books, webinars and so forth has only given cynics further reason to sneer. But the prevailing evidence suggests the green movement is more than a passing fancy and further, that green initiatives can deliver real benefits, including, believe it or not, long-term cost savings. Reuse, recycling, reduction and renewability ultimately will pay off some day. Pegging "some day" on the calendar is a bit of a challenge, but looking past tomorrow -- or next quarter's earnings imperative -- can help develop confidence in the economic, as well as moral, correctness of doing smart green things. The real meaning of supply chain management
SupplyChainBrain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
It's not just about logistics and purchasing. The supply chain consists of a broad network of partners who interact at every level of their organizations, says Douglas Lambert, director of the Global Supply Chain Forum at Ohio State University. It's more than just a question of semantics. The failure to give the term "supply chain" a broad enough definition can cause a company to adopt a short-sighted approach to its operations. More
