Ellen Weinreb writes, "As a sustainability recruiter, I have a unique vantage point to observe the evolution of sustainability across industries — as a practice as well as a profession. While talent show articles focus on the intersection of sustainability and human resources, today I want to take a different tack by highlighting some job trends. Simply by reading job descriptions, one can obtain information about a company's plans for expanding their sustainability programs. When a chief sustainability officer gets approval to increase his or her budget, one of the first things to follow is a job posting." More

    Managing confrontation in multicultural teams
Harvard Business Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Everyone knows that a little confrontation from time to time is constructive, right? And the classic business literature confirms it. Patrick Lencioni's "Five Dysfunctions of a Team," for example, discusses at length how to achieve the right amount of confrontation for ultimate team effectiveness — and concludes that fear of conflict is one of the five major barriers to success. It was a bestseller in the U.S. But what if you come from a culture where confrontation is downright rude? More

Recent developments in order fulfillment methods, technologies renew interest in DC automation
Distribution Digest    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A few weeks ago the big news was Amazon's purchase of Kiva Systems. This move on the part of continues to have a ripple effect throughout the logistics industry. One of the most immediate and positive effects of this surprising acquisition has been to shine a laser beam of light focused directly on how order fulfillment is accomplished in distribution centers throughout the industry. Why? Because the adoption of new methods and technologies by a major player is always an attention getter, and because when it comes to improving order picking, packing, and shipping strategies, most companies are not sure what solution(s) are the best for their operations. How to communicate like you mean it
CBS MoneyWatch    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Steve Tobak writes, "If you could only hear yourself, you'd know that things don't always come out the way you intend. You'd also understand that, sometimes, you sound like an idiot. Don't take that the wrong way; it's true of everyone, from time to time, albeit some more than others. What got me thinking about this is a comment to one of my posts on a LinkedIn group. The guy was trying so hard to get attention, sound smart, beat his drum, indulge himself, who knows what. But he was caustic, condescending, and contradicted himself, all in the same paragraph. As a result, he came across like an idiot." More

    Sustainability and the supply chain
Strategic Sourceror    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Green procurement policies generally state that organizations will make an effort to purchase goods and services that minimize environmental impacts and ultimately allow the company to create a smaller footprint. While the supply base has grown tremendously in this industry over the past several years, there are still quite a few hurdles to overcome when implementing these best practices in organizations. The following myths and challenges may sound familiar. More

What's that strange glow? Is it my supply chain?
The 21st Century Supply Chain    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
John Westerveld writes, "I was scanning my reader feed when this headline leaped out at me: 'Radioactive scrap metal is new threat to global supply chains.' This article references an incident at Bed, Bath and Beyond where a shipment of metal tissue box holders set off a radiation detector in California. While in this particular instance the product was not considered dangerous (it was taken off the shelves anyway), it still opens an interesting set of questions as more and more of our metal supply comes from metal recycling."
