    Mobile tech taking hold across the supply chain

    The chief information officer for BNSF Railway imagines the day when the railroad might use drones to inspect its vast network of rail bed and bridges, with the unmanned aircraft sending data back to the appropriate engineering and maintenance locations. An executive for Home Depot foresees a salesperson designing a customer's new kitchen on a tablet, making the sale, and submitting the order to start the production process. On the store floor, sales personnel — and customers themselves — will be able to pinpoint the location of inventory in the store or in nearby outlets.

    6th Annual Salary Survey: With warehouse/DC experience comes reward

    The results of Modern's 6th Annual Salary Survey paint an appealing picture of employment in materials handling, even as young, new talent continues to trickle into the industry. At $95,010, the average base salary is the highest in the six years of our survey, up nearly 6 percent over last year's record average. Just as with last year, an impressive 97 percent of the more than 735 respondents expressed satisfaction with their work.

    IKEA distribution center to double size of solar array
    IKEA, a home furnishings retailer, announced plans to double the current size of the rooftop solar array on its Maryland distribution center. The project will begin in 2014 and is slated to be completed by April of that same year.

    British Red Cross tests RFID for equipment tracking
    RFID Journal
    The British Red Cross has begun piloting an RFID system at its Bristol warehouse and London headquarters, in order to identify equipment used during emergency-response scenarios around the world. Approximately 500 assets, such as laptops, satellite telephones, forklifts, vehicles and generators, are being fitted with passive ultrahigh-frequency RFID tags that will be read via handheld readers as the items are sent into the field for use by Red Cross volunteers, and again when they are returned.
