Despite the healthcare overhaul, the future of medicine looks pretty bleak — at least according to doctors.
The medical landscape is changing. Today's doctors tend to be pessimistic about the future. Surveys show that in the coming years, more than 50 percent of physicians will cut back on patients seen, work part-time, switch to concierge medicine, retire or take other steps likely to reduce patient access. Plus, add the millions of new patients being added into the U.S. healthcare system through the Affordable Care Act and the picture certainly doesn’t look good. This picture points to alarming implications for access to medical care as we know it.

Mona Beedle: The challenges of a female truck driver
While it may not seem so unusual nowadays, at one time a woman behind the wheel of a big rig was a big deal. Even today, for many, doing so was a necessity, among them Mona Beedle, who left the road in 2014 and now fulfills several capacities for attorney Debra J. Sutton. Her career began in 1989, but it was not one in which she ever imagined, especially not as a mother of two young children. Click here to read the article in The Lake Wales News.

The Supreme Court is scheduled to issue a decision May 12 on whether it may take up the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association's suit against the DOT and its December 2015-published electronic logging device mandate once a decision has been issued by a lower court. A petition was filed in April with the Supreme Court by truck driver William B. Trescott, a company driver for Swift. The court has not yet responded to Trescott's request to intervene in the lawsuit.

If you own a trucking business, you've probably been hearing about the URS, or Unified Registration System, for years. You've probably heard it's a new registration system that does away with a lot of paperwork, requires regulated trucking businesses register online, and eliminates the old MC number, FF or MX number. And all that is true. Starting Sept. 30, this will be the means of getting a U.S. DOT number and registering your operating authority, adding or updating registration(s).

The California Labor Commissioner's Office is accepting applications for an amnesty program that will allow carriers to reclassify drivers as employees and avoid liability for misclassifying them as independent contractors. The Motor Carrier Employer Amnesty Program allows port drayage companies to enter into a settlement agreement with the Labor Commissioner and Employment Development Department, where the carrier agrees to pay all wages and benefits owed to drivers misclassified as independent contractors, pay all taxes owed to the state, and classify drivers as employees. The program ends Dec. 31, 2016.

Four years ago, I wrote a blog post with a catchy title: "The Death of the Buck-A-Mile Backhaul," where I explained that carriers could no longer cover costs on $1 per mile. At the time, those cheap hauls were going away. In March 2012, there was only one major van lane paying $1 per mile: Philadelphia to Chicago, at 48 cents for the line haul, plus a fuel surcharge of 52 cents. Of course, truckers were spending more than $4 per gallon for diesel in 2012, and a lot of other costs had also risen well above historical levels. Fuel costs are way down now — and so is the surcharge, at 14 cents. Yet, I regret to say, the "buck-a-mile" backhaul has returned to U.S. highways.
